A tiny island town gets a new disaster every round: tornado, flood, meteors, earthquake or acid rain. Play as a blocky islander in third person, pick your refuge and survive while buildings tear apart block by block and the other islanders panic. Keep your streak alive.
Calamity Cove is a third-person disaster survival game on a small island fishing town, in the spirit of the classic blocky survive-the-disaster games.
You play a blocky islander in a yellow shirt. The mouse orbits the camera, the wheel zooms (all the way in is first person, or press V), and you run, jump and climb like a toy. Get flung and you go limp as a six-part ragdoll; get blown up and you come apart into blocks.
Every round starts on the Lookout, a glass deck off the coast, with the Top Survivalists board. Then you're dropped on the island at dawn, noon, golden hour or night, and you have fifteen seconds to read the sky before the siren:
- Tornado: a funnel wanders the island, drawn to crowds, ripping buildings apart and throwing cars, furniture and people into the air, with the wreckage it lifts circling in the funnel. Get clear of its path. - Flash flood: the sea climbs through the streets, surges over the store roof twice and rots buildings from below. Get high, and then higher. - Meteor shower: burning rocks fall faster and faster, punch through roofs, start fires and blow out every window nearby. A glowing ring marks where each one lands, on the roof and on the floor beneath it. Get under a strong roof: the town hall, the church and the store take the hits that tear through the houses. - Earthquake: the ground itself moves you, jolts knock everyone over, cracks rumble and then tear open under anyone standing still, the towers topple whole across town and houses come apart storey by storey. Get well clear of buildings and towers (the edge of town, the hill behind the water tower) and watch the ground. - Acid rain: green rain eats the roofs, so the shelter you picked won't last. Keep finding cover.
Every 4th round is a double disaster, and some rounds are Hyper (everything worse) or Mystery (no name on the card). Doing nothing will get you killed most rounds.
The town is 1,567 pre-fractured low-poly pieces with real physics, and every house is lived in: floorboards, striped wallpaper and moulded cornices, folded curtains, patterned rugs and table runners, house plants and ferns, fireplaces with hearths and grates, kitchens with tiled splashbacks, kettles and fruit bowls, bookcases, clocks, quilted beds, slatted chairs on turned legs and pews, all of it sliding, toppling, floating and breaking. After dark the lamps are the only light indoors, each throwing a warm pool that the windows glow with from the street; knock a lamp over in an earthquake and its light goes over with it. The windows are real glass, and it shatters.
Before each round, vote on the Lookout for the time of day and a set piece: a fishing boat at the dock, a scaffold and tower crane, or a fairground wheel that breaks loose and rolls through town in an earthquake.
Nine islanders with personalities (the Climber, the Follower, the Know-it-all, the Panicker, the Storm-chaser and more) chatter, crowd into the same refuges and overload the same roofs. Find a balloon or an apple in town. Survivals, badges and the leaderboard are saved.
Controls: WASD move, mouse orbits the camera (click to capture, Esc to pause), wheel zoom, V first/third person, Shift sprint, Space jump (hold Space and W at a ledge to climb; with the balloon, hold Space to float), C crouch, E eat the apple, Q and E switch who you watch when you're out, M mute, F2 quality. Gamepads work too.
Made by Patch. The look is Bruno Simon's folio-2025 (MIT, github.com/brunosimon/folio-2025): its shading model, palette, presets, grass, foliage, leaves and flowers, plus its trees, bushes, lanterns, pole lights, fences, benches, bricks and explosive crates; the tornado force law and fireballs are rebuilt from it too. The buildings, furniture and gear are Patch's own, modelled in folio's style. Water: three-stylized-water by norio and MatrixRex (MIT). Islanders and you: Kenney Blocky Characters (CC0).
